Low-Maintenance Pets

by Chelsea Scott

Looking for a family pet, but need something that doesn’t require lots of time, exercise or money to maintain? A low-maintenance pet may be just what you’re looking for. If you like the sound of a pet that can provide fun and companionship while still being suitable for busy families, small kids or seniors, keep reading.

Hermit Crab

Before you say these guys aren’t pets, hear us out. These house-carrying crustaceans are known to be interesting

and social, which is why they are great for families. Be prepared to offer them a steady 75 degree temperature, sand, rocks and little tunnels or places to hide.

Gerbil

Once setup is complete, gerbils don’t need much. Place food, water, some

bedding, a wheel (and/or toys) and a house (or tunnel) in a cage and they will be content. Once in a while, take them out to play.

Cat

Cats make great additions to most homes. Most species of cats are low-maintenance because they pretty much look after themselves. All they really need is food, water, a litter

box and a few toys to keep them entertained/exercised.

Fish

Choose a fish that doesn’t need a filter or heater and can be quite happy in a bowl. Pick out some cool colored stone

for the bottom of the bowl, a little castle and whatever other decorations suit your fancy and you have a home your finned friend will love.

Small Bird

Cockatiels, canaries, finches and parakeets are all low-maintenance. You only need a cage, food, water and a fresh

newspaper (changed daily). These birds don’t need exercise, but they do enjoy company and someone to talk to.

Be sure to conduct your own research regarding pets and how to care for them, and consult with your family before purchasing any pet.
